Nancy Canyon
Nancy Lou Canyon believes in the wild mind, or right hemisphere, as the source for all her creative work. As a visual artist, spontaneity sets down the initial brushstroke and then she continues with expressive energy moving through her in a conversation of color and intuition. She says, “It’s a practice in letting go and deep listening. The less I think, the more surprising the results.” As a writer, she works the same. “I put down the first thought that comes to mind.

Ms. Canyon’s abstract acrylic paintings are rendered on acid-free cotton paper. She loves the way acrylic remains brilliant as it pools in transparent and opaque layers. The abstract’s unexpected imagery frequently evokes a story for her and the viewer.

Ms. Canyon has lived in Fairhaven for the past four years and the PNW for 23 years. Before that, she grew up in Spokane where she began to paint, write, and dance as a child. Her studies include art & movement therapy, dance, psychology, fine art, and CranioSacral therapy. She holds the MFA in Creative Writing from PLU. She is the owner of Studio #9 in the Morgan Block Building in Historic Fairhaven. There she gathers regularly with others to make art and write.
